on a recent dive trip I forgot my snorkel at my car.... needless to say it was a long way to my car and I thought it would be fine to try and dive without my snorkel... it was so difficult... but as luck would have it there was a reason I watched hours and hours of MacGywer when i was younger! I made myself a snorkel out of some kelp...
and it worked great! some problems is that you have to use the younger kelp to make one (because it's alot more flexible to slide and bend into your mouth!) but it can't be made out of the ends because they are to narrow making breathing and clearing really difficult... needless to say it could have been a terrible dive but I ended up really enjoy the dive and could appreciate the importance of not forgetting your snorkel! Finding the kelp was a bit of luck... we where trawling out and i saw two patches and told the skipper to head over as i saw one boat near the kelp and as soon as we went passed we got 2 hook ups on the bungee....
the kelp was free floating... after the first 2 patches we found out we headed off again trawling and found another patch on our own and stopped near by and chucked some spinners.... one of the best takes was on a chissel nosed plug...had this massive wake behind it... ended up being the biggest fish of the day! really was exceptional! I was away this weekend at Betties and I didn't manage to dive so I thought I would post a video that I found the other day that is just amazing! I've got a second hand Open cell suit (R1400) that is in great condition available as well as a 90cm Rabitech speargun (R500).
Please contact me if you are interested in any of the above. I went out on Saturday hoping for some good diving and I was really dissapointed! we had terrible vis, about 2m and it was super spooky which is not really what you want in False Bay. We decided to to trawl for tail which didn't work out then we tried for snoek and chokka which we also blanked... that being said it was a beautiful day out on the see. I found this clip of the NZ scene....Looks amazing and you can also see the Freedivers Evolution in action! Happy Galjoen season everyone! Here's a picture of my biggest galjoen last season! heading out this week to get one definitely!
Spearfishing kob has always been a dream of mine for years.... I'm still hoping one day I'll have the opportunity, the closest I've come this far is seeing one kob for about 2 seconds in the transkei coast from a shore dive. Here in the cape people have been able to shoot some nice fish around Melkbos up the west coast but the visibility is normally terrible when the water is warm enough to find them...Can't believe how lucky this guy is to shoot one and then find the same fish that tore out... So it's finally here... we have partnered with Spearline Cape to offer boat trips out for the local spearo who doesn't have access to a boat.
Trips would be planned on the Tuesday of that week for diving that weekend. Areas we will be visiting are as follows: Mouille Point to Camps Bay False Bay ( Including but not limited to - Smits , Buffels , Rooi els , Klippertjies , Hangklip ) Cape Point / South west reefs Rocky Bank Dassen Island Arniston Trips start at 7am and will finish by 3pm weather permitting 3 divers per trip for more information e-mail [email protected] or [email protected] Our Boat is ideally suited and has been rigged especially for spearfishing. We have the latest electronics on board to help us locate great diving areas. I've been meaning to post these pics of my last Arniston trip.... Epic day but not such great fish but it was worth it all! even the fine on the way back! Johnny with a little tropical he managed to get! My little boat! a Roman I found at the back of a cave in 2m of water... Second biggest to date a nice bronze bream I shot during a long dive in some heavy surge... |
